Jack Russell Terriers should be bred to improve the breed characteristics. Keep in mind that the Jack Russell Terrier is a working dog and preserving and enhancing its working dog qualities is a primary goal of breeding.
Ideally, only Jack Russell Terriers with an excellent pedigree and a potential to become dog trials winners should be bred. There should be at least four titled dogs in at least three generations. Bred dogs must be certified, free of genetic diseases and should have a stable temperament. Needless to say, they should perfectly fit the breed standard. When you hear someone say that this is a breeding quality dog, the dog must have all the above-mentioned characteristics.
Breeding for profit, in order to give your children an opportunity to see the birth of puppies, or a simple wish to have puppies from your pet quality dog are erroneous reasons to breed. These dogs run a risk of joining rescue dogs whose number is growing. Therefore, it is important to realize that responsible breeding is breeding of high quality Jack Russell Terriers for health, temperament and working skills.
Potential mates should be evaluated in order not to double their faults in the future litter. Breeding should be done professionally. Dog owners who don't know what faults they should look for or what advantages are desirable to enhance in the litter must not consider breeding at all. It is important to remember that the breeder who creates life is responsible for it. Responsible breeders of Jack Russell Terriers work hard to maintain the breed standard and introduce some improvement.
