The breed appeared in 19th century in England and was bred by a clergyman named Jack Russell. This little inquisitive terrier was a good small game hunter and succeeded in hunting fox by digging the quarry out of its den. Breeders laid stress on the working ability of the breed and paid little attention to the appearance of the dogs.
